Forward step / rear foot follows

Movement / Solo mat / Foundation

A short step forward, lead foot first, with the stagger restored before the next.

Solo study. Solo rehearsal of a shape a coach has already shown you. No partner, no resistance, no finish against anyone. Not coach-verified.

Why it matters

Closing distance is where most first-year wrestlers stand up: the step is long, the rear foot is late, and for half a second the feet are together and the stance is gone. A forward step that keeps the base is short, and it is finished by the rear foot, not the lead.

The phases

Wrestling stance: Hands ready. Rendered human phase image, three-quarter view.
Wrestling stance, phase 3 of 4: Hands ready.
Forward step: Rear foot follows. Rendered human phase image, three-quarter view.
Forward step, phase 3 of 4: Rear foot follows.

Wrestling stance

  1. Base. Begin with a base wide enough to move from.
  2. Knees flexed. Flex the knees and hips while keeping the head up.
  3. Hands ready. Hands stay ahead of the body, ready to make contact.
  4. Hold shape. Maintain a shape you can move from in either direction.

Watch for: Do not turn a lower stance into looking down at the mat.

Forward step

  1. Stance. Start in the staggered stance with the lead foot ahead.
  2. Lead foot first. Push off the rear foot and place the lead foot a short step forward.
  3. Rear foot follows. Bring the rear foot the same distance so the stagger returns.
  4. Base restored. Finish with the same width and the same height you started at.

Watch for: The feet never come together in the middle of a step. If they do, the step was too long.

Three common faults

Overstriding
The lead foot lands far ahead and the rear leg straightens. Half the distance, twice the steps.
Rear foot late
The lead foot lands and the rear foot stays behind. The step is not over until the stagger is back.
Rising
Each step gains a centimetre of height. Watch the hips at the side camera; they should draw a flat line.

In the room

  1. Push off the rear foot; the lead foot places, it does not reach.
  2. Bring the rear foot the same distance so the stagger returns.
  3. Same height at the end as at the start.
